The discovery of God who is Love led Chiara and her first companions to live the Word and thus respond to His love, but “To love Him means to do what He wants: mutual love. To love Him means to love one another with practical, effective love and with gentle, affective love. These souls loved each other in order to love Him”[2].Chiara wrote those words in 1948 sharing the experience that was to be called the “story of the Ideal”. This love, therefore, carries within itself the human dimension, concerning the relational aspect that constitutes each person, and the supernatural dimension that raises each person up into the complete fulfilment of their being. Living gospel love and in particular mutual love, is another cornerstone which those who want to live according to the spirituality of unity cannot ignore. Looking back, Chiara Lubich recalled, “God had focused our attention on the new commandment. And in doing so (…) had revealed to us the heart of Christianity”[3]. The typically evangelical root of this aspect of Chiara’s spirituality was spontaneously welcomed in ecumenical spheres. On 30th March, 1989, addressing members of the Ancient Oriental and Catholic Churches gathered in Castel Gandolfo for an ecumenical conference, Chiara Lubich gave a talk on the theme: Mutual love: cornerstone of the spirituality of unity, in which she was able to highlight the characteristics of gospel love, which leads to a way of treating each other fraternally and which has as its first characteristic that of seeing Jesus in everyone. For this reason, without distinction of any kind, this love is ready to take the first step following the example of Jesus himself: “So, this is what characterizes authentic love: to see Jesus in our neighbour, to love everyone and to be the first to love. To love! But where do we begin? We begin with those who are closest to us. (…) It is for this reason that our spirituality teaches us to transform into charity the different contacts we have with our neighbours throughout the day (…)We must do everything for Jesus in our brothers and sisters, neglecting no one, indeed, taking the initiative in loving everyone.” If we live like this, if we love, usually we are loved in return” [4]. Love of neighbour also sets in motion a dynamic reciprocity even between people of different faiths and beliefs, and “When being the first to love is lived together by two or more people, there is mutual love, the sure foundation of peace and unity in the world, that can give life to the universal human family, within which the relationships between persons, groups and peoples are such as to break down divisions, barriers of all kinds, in every age”[5].
