In Bangkok, Thailand, in early January, Chiara met the Supreme Patriarch of Thai Buddhism H.H. Somdet Phra Nyanasamvara, who encouraged dialogue and collaboration between Buddhists and the Focolare Movement. On January 6, in Chiang Mai, she spoke to numerous Buddhist monks, nuns and lay people and shared her spiritual experience with them. In Manila, where the University of Santo Tomas awarded her an honorary doctorate in social communications, she also met the General Assembly of the Philippine Bishops’ Conference, sharing her experience and that of the Focolare Movement.
In 2002, in Castel Gandolfo (Rome), a first symposium on interreligious dialogue took place between members of the Abba School and leading Hindu scholars and teachers. Symposia followed with representatives of Buddhism (2004), Judaism (2005) and Islam (2005).
