I came to bring fire to the earth…

Commetary on the Word of Life: ‘I came to bring fire to the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled!’ (Lk 12:49)) In the Old Testament fire symbolizes the word of God as spoken by a prophet. But it also signifies divine justice that purifies God’s people by passing among them. The Word of Jesus is the same. It builds up, but while it does so it destroys whatever has no real substance, whatever must fall, whatever is vanity, and leaves standing only the truth. John the Baptist said of Jesus: ‘He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire’ (Lk 3:16), foretelling Christian baptism inaugurated on the day of Pentecost with the outpouring of the Holy Spirit and the appearance of tongues of fire (see Acts 2:3). La nostra responsabilità è grande

Roma, 30 marzo 1959 Certo che la nostra responsabilità è grande, perché noi cristiani dobbiamo essere dei testimoni di Cristo e, da come ci comportiamo, gli altri possono intuire quale sia il messaggio portato da Gesù in terra. Ma succede che alle volte la testimonianza di Cristo fatta dalle nostre persone sia poca o nulla, o deforme in una maniera o in un’altra. Caratteri vari e menti indocili all’azione della grazia danno di Gesù un’idea a loro immagine e somiglianza, per cui il mondo che vede e osserva, deduce quanto può dedurre dai dati che possiede: che la religione, ad esempio, piega il collo alle persone, ma non la volontà, nella sua radice più profonda, perché quel dato cristiano che si dice discepolo di Cristo, essendo ancor lui che vive in se stesso e non Cristo in lui, getta un’ombra che vela, nella sua persona, la religione da lui professata. We have a great responsibility

Rome, March 30, 1959 We certainly have a great responsibility. We Christians must give witness to Christ and from the way we act people should be able to grasp the message that Christ brought on earth. But at times the witness we give of Christ is weak—if not non-existent— or deformed in one way or another. Various personalities and minds averse to the action of grace project an image of Jesus that is often in their own image and likeness. La dedicazione pubblica è avvenuta nei pressi dell’oasi naturalistica dello Stagno di Molentargius (regno dei fenicotteri). È seguito, presso l’Aula consiliare del palazzo Civico di Cagliari, un convegno di studi dal titolo “Chiara Lubich: spiritualità, cultura e dialogo”.
