1944 Jesus Crucified and Forsaken

Rushing day and night to visit the abandoned elderly and look after the poor, one of Chiara's companions, Dori Zamboni, got an infection on her face. On January 24, 1944, Father Casimiro Bonetti who went to visit her, seeing the wound, turned suddenly to Chiara with a question: "Do you know what Jesus' greatest pain was?". According to the prevailing ideas of the Christians of that time, the girls replied, "His suffering in the garden of olives ". But the priest replied, “No, Jesus suffered more when on the cross he cried out, 'My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?'” (Mt 27:46). Impressed by those words, as soon as they were alone, Chiara said, “We have only one life, let's spend it as best we can! If Jesus' greatest sorrow was when he felt forsaken by the Father, we will follow Jesus Forsaken.”

1938 qualifies as a teacher

On 20 July 1938 Silvia Lubich obtained her teaching certificate and in the autumn of the same year began teaching in an elementary school. «I loved the children so much, because I already saw Jesus in them. He had said, “Whatever you did to the least of my brothers and sisters”. […] In the afternoon I used to say, "Now have a sleep for half an hour. You can rest your arms and head on the desk.". Walking past them, I felt I wanted to bless them, [...] like a mother. Yes, and there was silence. This experience of teaching in Castello in Val di Sole, and then in Livo, [...] trained me to love»[1].

1943 the day of “Yes”

On December 7, 1943, in the early morning, defying the storm that raged and made her journey difficult, Chiara went to the Capuchin Friary and there she made the act of ‘consecration’. It was the day when “Silvia became Chiara and the forest fire of the Focolare started in a young girl’s heart.”[1]. That day, in the chapel of the Capuchin Friary, Chiara had no intention of founding anything. She was marrying God.

1935 – 1938 attends the Istituto Magistrale

In order to contribute to the family budget, in the school year 1931/32 Silvia began to study commerce at a preliminary vocational school. Her results and her abilities were recognized by the teachers, and this convinced her parents to change her course of studies. Thus, in October 1935, after passing an exam Silvia was admitted to the higher course of the Instituto Magistrale, attending the school that today still bears the name of "Antonio Rosmini".

1944 the first focolare

After the violent bombardment of May 13, the Lubich family had to leave the city, but Chiara remained in Trent. With some companions she shared an apartment in Piazza Cappuccini. These were the circumstances in which the first focolare was born. “We were like so pieces of wood heaped together, to be lit and burned by Jesus among us. We would have broken with everything, except the unity that through Jesus forsaken remained firm”[1].

1944 Omnia vincit amor

Until September 2, 1943, there had been no bombings in the Trentino region, but afterwards twenty-five thousand people left the city and bomb shelters were built (the largest in Piazza Venezia). By May 3, 1945, the air raids had claimed a total of 400 victims. Especially damaging was the bombing of Trent on May 13, 1944, when one hundred deaths were recorded. Igino Giordani, recalling how Chiara lived that moment, wrote, "That night she slept outdoors, in Gocciadoro park, with her parents, who spent those hours thinking about how to get away. Chiara remembered that she had promised her spiritual director not to leave the city of Trent: hence her suffering at the thought of the imminent separation. She wept continuously. Her parents, not knowing why, tried to comfort her. She consoled herself by recalling the motto “Omnia vincit amor” (Virgil). And praying while looking up at the night sky, she saw the constellation of the Great Bear cross the sky. Shortly before dawn, when her parents, who were obliged to
