1966 the Gen movement (New Generation) is born

On July 6, 1966, Chiara addressed a group of girls - children and teens - gathered at Rocca di Papa who had been received in audience by Pope Paul VI: “This is an historic date, because it is the first time that the Holy Father has received the girls of the Focolare Movement. Just today, I was planning to officially inaugurate both the children’s section – all those who live the Ideal up to the age of 14 – and the youth section – those from the age of 14 upwards. I know that this was something you really wanted (...) and it seems to me that the Holy Father, receiving you and naming you, has, so to speak, “baptized” the birth of these two sections. […] Hence, a new life begins, which you must throw yourselves into with love and enthusiasm. And this applies to the boys as well”[1]. . In 1966, before the cultural revolutions of ’68, Chiara encouraged young people to be the protagonists of a new world:

1997 at the Malcolm X Mosque in Harlem

On May 18, 1997, a new stage of relations between Christians and Muslims began. Chiara Lubich, a Christian woman, was invited by Imam W. D. Mohammed, a charismatic leader of African American Muslims, to address the faithful gathered in the Malcolm X Mosque in Harlem. At the end of that day, the Imam said: “Today here in Harlem, New York, a page of history has been written.” The two leaders made a pact of fraternity that was then extended to the two movements. Since then, regular meetings have been held in the United States between Christian and Muslim communities, black and white, which aim to build universal brotherhood with an impact on cities and neighbourhoods. More than forty mosques and Focolare communities are involved in various cities.

1996 UNESCO prize for Peace Education

On 17 December 1996, Chiara received the UNESCO Prize for Peace Education. In her speech, she outlined what she described as the "secret" of the success of the Movement that began with her: "It lies in a way of life, in a new lifestyle adopted by millions of people who, inspired fundamentally by Christian principles (without neglecting, but indeed highlighting parallel values present in other faiths and different cultures) have brought peace and unity to this world, that is so much in need of rediscovering or consolidating peace. It is a new, up to date and modern spirituality, the spirituality of unity”[1]. Chiara never attributed to herself the honours that were given to her, but rather to the charism that God had given her and to those in the world who lived it. Her work was recognized at a civic level too. As well as the prize for Peace Education, she received the Council of Europe Human Rights Prize in Strasbourg on September 22, 1998, and many honorary citizenships.

1958 the meeting with Klaus Hemmerle

When Chiara met Klaus Hemmerle (1929-1994), in the Mariapolis of 1958, he was a young priest. He was a teacher, author of numerous publications, and active in the social and ecumenical fields. Later, in 1975, he was appointed bishop of Aachen. The spirituality of unity was for him a "reality of life, but also a theological challenge", a "school of life" and a "school for theology". Of that first meeting, Bishop Hemmerle recalls, «Although I did not foresee it, the closeness and presence of God opened before me in a way that, despite my intense theological studies, I had never experienced before. There, for the first time, I truly experienced God. God entered deeply into our mutual relations. It was a community experience. I was thus irresistibly drawn into this new life".[1].
