Il 7 luglio 1972 moriva il Patriarca Ecumenico Athenagoras I. Nel quarantesimo dalla sua scomparsa pubblichiamo uno stralcio dal libro "Il Grido" dove Chiara Lubich lo ricorda. (...) durante il pontificato di Paolo VI ho avuto l'avventura di conoscere e di amare un Volto di Gesù abbandonato specialissimo, portatore non di dolore da abbracciare, ma unicamente di intensissimo amore: quello che splendeva nel grande Athenagoras I, Patriarca Ecumenico di Costantinopoli. La Provvidenza, infatti, ha voluto che mi trovassi ad essere tramite ufficioso fra lui ed il Santo Padre Paolo VI; che conoscessi il suo pensiero, il suo struggente anelito all'unità della Chiesa ortodossa con la nostra Chiesa, che diventassi per anni ambasciatrice del suo tenero, delicato amore per il Papa. Ed infine latrice delle risposte del Papa a lui. Athenagoras era un grande carismatico, il più grande da me conosciuto al di là della Chiesa cattolica. E, come tale, anche un profeta, per cui vedeva l'avvenire e soffriva che il presente fosse solo attesa. Mi diceva: “Giorno verrà…, il sole salirà

By the will of Providence I found myself an unofficial intermediary between the Patriarch and the Holy Father. I came to know Athenagoras’ thought, his all-consuming longing for the unity of the Orthodox Church with ours. For years I became the ambassador of his tender, delicate love for the pope and the bearer of the pope’s replies to him. Athenagoras was a deeply charismatic person, more endowed with the gifts of the Spirit than anyone I have known outside of the Catholic Church. Commento alla Parola di Vita: A chi ha sarà dato e sarà nell'abbondanza; e a chi non ha sarà tolto anche quello che ha (Mt 13,12) Con queste parole Gesù risponde ai suoi discepoli che gli avevano chiesto perché parlasse in parabole. Egli spiega che non a tutti è dato di conoscere i misteri del regno dei cieli, ma solo alle persone ben disposte, a quelle che accolgono le sue parole e le vivono.Fra i suoi ascoltatori ci sono, infatti, alcuni che chiudono volontariamente occhi e orecchie per cui “pur vedendo non vedono, e pur udendo non odono e non comprendono” . Sono coloro che vedono e ascoltano Gesù, ma, pensando di conoscere già tutta la verità, non credono alle sue parole e ai fatti che le confermano. Commentary of the Word of Life: To anyone who has, more will be given and he will grow rich; from anyone who has not, even what he has will be taken away (Mt 13,12) Jesus says these words in answer to his disciples who asked him why he speaks in parables. He explains that not everyone is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but only people who are open, only those who accept his words and live them.In fact, some of those who hear him choose to close their eyes and ears so that “they look but do not see and hear but do not listen or understand” (Mt. 13:13). These are people who see and hear Jesus, but because they assume that they already know all the truth, they do not believe his words or the actions that confirm them.
