Truly I tell you, if two of you agree on earth about anything you ask …

Rome, 25 august 1981 Commentary of the Word of Life1: Truly I tell you, if two of you agree on earth about anything you ask, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them. (Mt. 18:19-20). This, it seems to me, is one of the things Jesus said that most fill our hearts with joy. How many needs in life, how many good desires we don’t know how to satisfy! Possibly you feel sure that only divine intervention, a grace from heaven, can gain what your whole being longs for. And now you hear words of amazing clarity and absolute certainty coming from Jesus’ lips: Truly I tell you, if two of you agree on earth about anything you ask, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them. You have probably read in the gospels how often

Chiara answers the children’s question: What is the Pope like?

Castel Gandolfo, 18 June 1988 Chiara’s catechism to children on Peter’s primacy of love and of his successors. She draws from the Holy Scriptures and her personal experience. "What is the Pope like? Does he have love inside?”. Since I have seen the Pope many times, … she asks me, "What is the Pope like?" Look, the Pope is a special person, just think of all the languages that he knows   he speaks almost all the languages, he is very strong, he travels around the world without getting too tired. And then he knows many things, he has studied a lot.But the most beautiful thing about the Pope is that he has a heart that is able to love more than anyone else, more than anyone else, more than all the other people in the world. Do you know why? Because he is the successor of Saint Peter. Peter was the first Pope. Then there was another, and then another, and then another and now we have this Pope. The Popes

The Presence of God in the Eucharist

Rocca di Papa, 9 July 1974 Before her Chiara has the young people (Gen1) of the Movement. Drop by drop, she wishes to transmit to them the whole patrimony of light and wisdom that she has received from God. Here we have her relationship with the Eucharist (...)God is Love: what an infinitely meaningful treasure is contained in these words! God is Love. He is not a God who is far away, static and inaccessible. God is Love and He comes towards each one of us in a thousand different ways. We must only want it.Let's look around us, Gen, to discover together to what folly of love our God ... was moved by His love for us. Let's look to see if in the world there is any trace of His love, any sign of His presence. Let's search for Him, not only to affirm a truth, not out of curiosity, good though it may be, but in order to draw near to His presence, to expose ourselves to the

The abyss inside me

Rome, 22 june 1972 With great inner silence we enter in Chiara’s conversation with the One and Triune God. The Trinity inside me!The abyss inside me!Immensity inside me!The chasm of love inside me! The Father who Jesus announcedinside me!The Word! The Holy Spirit, who I alwayswant to have in order to serve the Work of Mary, inside me! I ask for nothing less.I want to live in this abyss, lose myself in this sun, live together with Eternal Life. What should I do then? Prune the life outsideand live the one inside. The more I cut communicationswith the externalthe more I speak with the Trinityinside me. (Diary entry 22 May 1972, cited in Essential Writings, New City Press, New York 2007, p.147) Text

As a Heavenly Plane Sloping

Rome, 5 March 19581 This writing, which is full of deep inspiration, was published for the first time in the Italian magazine “Città Nuova” in 1958, with the title “Mary”. Mary is not easily understood even though she is greatly loved. In a heart that is far from God, one is more likely to find devotion to her than to Jesus. She is universally loved. And the reason is this: it is Mary’s nature to be Mother. Mary is not easily understood even though she is greatly loved. In a heart that is far from God, one is more likely to find devotion to her than to Jesus. She is universally loved. And the reason is this: it is Mary’s nature to be Mother.Mothers, in general, are not “understood,” especially by younger children; they are “loved.” And not infrequently, indeed often, one hears that an eighty-year-old man dies saying as his last word: “mother.”A mother is more the object of the heart’s intuition than of the mind’s speculation. She is more poetry than philosophy, because

Characteristics of the Politician of Unity

Turin (Royal Theatre), 2 June 2002 Chiara Lubich outlines the identity-kit of the politician who lives for unity, who interpellates voters and those elected in the context of the European elections. It is not my experience but a theme that I was asked to address. The title is this: “The Movement for Unity – which would be the political expression of the Focolare Movement – and political fraternity. Dear Mr. Mayor, Your Eminence, Honourable senators and deputies, civil and religious leaders who have come from all over the Piedmont and Valle d’Aosta regions, ladies and gentlemen, young people here present, it’s with great joy that I accept this invitation to speak of fraternity in the light of the experience and charter of the Movement for Unity.
