Do not conform yourself to this age…

Commetary on the Word of Life: Do not conform yourself to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect. (Rm 12:2) This word of life is found in the second part of Saint Paul’s letter to the Romans. The apostle is describing the actions of a Christian as the expression of the new life — real love, real joy and real freedom — that God has given to us. It is Christian life understood as a new way of facing the various situations and problems encountered in everyday life with the light and the strength of the Holy Spirit. In this verse, which is closely connected to the preceding one, the apostle describes the goal and underlying attitude that should characterize our behavior, that is, to make of our lives a song of praise to God, an act of love carried out across time in the constant quest of his will,

That Voice

I must never forget that Reality lives in me and that I must give to my brothers and sisters, above all, the vital fluid that rises from the depths of my soul, which is the subtle voice of God that urges and enlightens. We have to silence everything in us in order to discover his voice. And we have to extract this voice, as we would take a diamond out of the mud, clean it, place it in view and give it when opportune, because it is love, and love must be given. Like a fire fed with straw, love blazes when it is communicated, otherwise it will die out. Let’s run because the light remains lit only in the soul where love is in motion, is alive. from Essential Writings, (La Dottrina Spirituale, Mondadori 2001)

July 12, 1970

From Chiara’s Diary An experience that I have been living for some time now is this: when, in asking Jesus for some grace, I do not find the necessary faith, if I add “through Mary’s intercession,” I then have it. Mary, just her name is “substance of love” for my soul.". This has not always been the case, absolutely not, but it has been so for some time now. In her, I see everything as possible, with her there are no problems that cannot be resolved…. But they are not just words: Mary is a sublime reality for my soul, a secure refuge: she is really my mother..

You shall love the Lord your God…

Commetary on the Word of Life: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and all your mind. (Mt 22:37) The debate was common between schools of rabbis at the time of Jesus. The Scriptures have many commandments: which is the first? Jesus was considered a teacher and he did not duck the question when asked: ‘Which commandment in the law is the greatest?’ He gives an original answer, uniting love of God with love of neighbour. His disciples can never separate these two loves, as the leaves of a tree cannot be separated from its roots. The more they love God, the more intensely they love their brothers and sisters; the more they love their brothers and sisters, the more they deepen their love for God. Jesus knows, more than anyone, the true nature of the God we must love. And so he knows just how God is to be loved: God is his Father and our Father, his God and our

Mary Desolate

Mary at the foot of the cross, in her heart-rending stabat that makes of her a bitter sea of anguish, is the highest expression in a human creature of heroism in every virtue. … The Desolate is meekness par excellence, gentle, poor to the point of losing her Son who is God, … the righteous one who does not complain when deprived of what was given her purely by election; the pure one in emotional detachment, tested to the utmost, from her Son who is God … In her is the triumph of the virtues of faith and hope through the charity that enflamed her throughout her life, and here set her ablaze as she participated in such a living way in the Redemption. … Mary, in the desolation that clothed her with every virtue, furthermore will teach us to equip ourselves with patience, perseverance, simplicity and silence, so that in the night of what is human in us, there may shine out for the world the light of God dwelling
