Roma, ottobre 1948 Erano i tempi di guerra.Tutto crollava di fronte a noi, giovanette, attaccate ai nostri sogni per l’avvenire: case, scuole, persone care, carriere.Il Signore pronunciava coi fatti una delle sue eterne parole: «Tutto è vanità, nient’altro che vanità...».Fu da quella devastazione completa e molteplice di tutto ciò che formava l’oggetto del nostro povero cuore, che nacque il nostro ideale.Vedevamo altre giovinezze gettarsi nell’entusiasmo sincero per la salvezza e l’avvenire migliore della Patria.Era facile parlar d’Ideale in quella vita morta a tutto ciò che umanamente potrebbe attrarre.Noi sentivamo che un solo ideale era vero, immortale: Dio. Di fronte al crollo provocato dall’odio, vivissimo apparve alla nostra mente giovanetta Colui che non muore.E lo vedemmo e lo amammo nella sua essenza: «Deus caritas est».Ci suggellò i nostri pensieri e le nostre aspirazioni un’altra figliola che in altri tempi, non molto dissimili dai nostri, seppe illuminare della sua luce divina le tenebre del peccato e riscaldare i cuori gelidi d’egoismo, d’odio, di rancori: Chiara d’Assisi.Anch’ella vide come noi la vanità del mondo,

Rome, October 1948 It was a time of war.Everything crumbled before us, young as we were, attached to our dreams for the future: a home, our studies, people dear to us, our career. Così ho visto il Papa

Intervista a Chiara Lubich Lei ha avuto occasione di essere ricevuta più volte in udienza da Paolo VI. Qual è stata l’impressione più forte che le è rimasta nel ricordo? La più forte impressione l’ho riportata certamente durante la prima udienza. Ho avuto la sensazione netta di trovarmi di fronte ad una persona che amava in modo del tutto particolare. Il Papa parlava parole di quella sapienza che supera tutti gli ostacoli giuridici tuttora vigenti; comprendeva, accoglieva nella sua anima tutta la complessa opera che gli presentavo. Il Papa stesso mi incoraggiò a dir tutto, perché lì tutto era possibile . Ricordo che sentii una perfetta sintonia fra ciò che il Papa mi diceva e ciò che mi sembrava fosse venuto da Dio per l’edificazione di quest’opera. Interview with Chiara You've had several audiences with Pope Paul VI. What has been your strongest impression of these audi¬ences? The strongest impression that I had was certainly during the first audience. I felt I was in front of a person who loved in a very special way. The wisdom in the Pope's words was such that it overcame all the juridical obstacles still present; he understood; he received in his soul the whole content of the Movement that I was presenting to him. Commento alla Parola di Vita: Chi dunque mi riconoscerà davanti agli uomini, anch'io lo riconoscerò davanti al Padre mio che è nei cieli; chi invece mi rinnegherà davanti agli uomini, anch'io lo rinnegherò davanti al Padre mio che è nei cieli (Mt 10,32-33). Everyone who acknowledges me before others …

Commentary of the Word of Life: Everyone who acknowledges me before others I will acknowledge before my heavenly Father. But whoever denies me before others I will deny before my heavenly Father (Mt 10,32-33). This word of life is a source of great joy and encouragement to all Christians.With this passage, Jesus calls us to be consistent in living out our faith in him, because our eternal destiny depends on the attitude we have assumed toward him during our lifetime. If we declare ourselves for him before others, he says, he will have reason to declare himself for us before his Father. If instead we have disowned him before others, he will disown us before his Father. Everyone who acknowledges me before others I will acknowledge before my heavenly Father.
