Roma, 25 aprile 1994 Commento alla Parola di vita: Se osserverete i miei comandamenti, rimarrete nel mio amore, come io ho osservato i comandamenti del Padre mio e rimango nel suo amore (Gv 15,10). Queste parole sono prese dall'ampio discorso riportato dal quarto Vangelo (cf Gv 13,31-17,26), che Gesù ha rivolto ai suoi apostoli dopo l'ultima cena. Viene in luce che l'osservanza dei suoi comandamenti ci fa rimanere nell'amore. Esse richiamano un versetto precedente, in cui Gesù dice ai suoi apostoli: "Se mi amate, osserverete i miei comandamenti" (Gv 14,15) ove viene in luce che l'amore per Gesù deve essere il movente, la radice da cui deve partire l'osservanza dei suoi comandamenti. Ne risulta così una circolarità tra l'amore per Gesù e l'osservanza dei suoi comandamenti. L'amore per Gesù ci spinge a vivere sempre più fedelmente la sua parola; nello stesso tempo la parola di Gesù vissuta ci fa rimanere, e quindi ci fa crescere sempre più nell'amore per Lui. Rome, 25 April 1994 Commentary of the Word of Life: If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love (Jn 15:10). These words are taken from Jesus’ Farewell Discourse in the Fourth Gospel (Jn 13:31 - 17:26), which he gave to his apostles after the last supper. It becomes clear that by keeping his commandments we remain in his love. These words also recall an earlier verse where Jesus tells his apostles, ‘If you love me, you will keep my commandments’ (Jn 14:15). Here it becomes clear that love for Jesus must be the moving force, the root for keeping his commandments. The result is a circular motion between love for Jesus and keeping his commandments. Love for Jesus urges us to live his word always more faithfully and, at the same time, living the word of Jesus makes us abide in him and therefore grow always more in love for him. Those who begin to live it earnestly, … in the manner that Jesus had lived it, become aware, first of all, of a leap in the quality of their spiritual life. For instance, they experience in a new manner the gifts of the Spirit. They come to know a new kind of joy, a peace, kindness and magnanimity.
