Rocca di Papa, 17 Marzo 1983 (...) Spesse volte il pensiero della morte ci è amaro perché temiamo il giudizio di Dio. Esso ci appare una vera incognita e noi ne abbiamo paura al ricordo dei nostri peccati. Se però credessimo alle parole di Gesù, noi potremmo, in certo modo, condizionarlo decisamente e sapere, già fin d’ora, quello che ci succederà. Egli ha detto: “Con la misura con la quale misurate sarete misurati” (Mt 7, 2) e “Beati i misericordiosi perché troveranno misericordia” (Mt 5, 7).Il nostro comportamento verso il prossimo è come un bumerang che va e torna, ripercuotendosi su di noi. Va un giudizio severo? Torna un giudizio severo. Va la misericordia? Torna la misericordia. Misuriamo il prossimo attenuando le sue responsabilità? Saranno attenuate le nostre. Misuriamo, cercando di cogliere l’aspetto buono della questione, scusando, non ergendoci comunque noi a giudici, nemmeno dei casi più palesi, ma lasciando ogni verdetto a Dio? Not knowing what it will be like, we become frightened at the thought of our sins. If we believed Jesus' words, however, we would be able to influence the outcome of this judgement decisively, and we would have a pretty good idea of what to expect. Jesus said: "The measure you give will be the measure you get" (Mt. 7:2), and "Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy" (Mt. 5:7).Our behaviour toward our neighbour is like a boomerang, which, when thrown, comes back to us. Do we judge severely? A severe judgement will come back to us. Do we show mercy? Mercy will come back to us. When judging our neighbour, are we lenient, allowing him or her the benefit of the doubt? Then the same will happen to us. When dealing with our neighbour, do we try to find the good in the situation; make excuses;
