Roma, 25 ottobre 1999 Commento alla Parola di vita: Beati i puri di cuore perché vedranno Dio (Mt 5,8). La predicazione di Gesù si apre col discorso della montagna. Davanti al lago di Tiberiade su una collina nei pressi di Cafarnao, seduto, come usavano fare i maestri, Gesù annuncia alle folle l'uomo delle beatitudini. Più volte nell'Antico Testamento risuonava la parola "beato" e cioè l'esaltazione di colui che adempiva, nei modi più vari, la Parola del Signore. Le beatitudini di Gesù riecheggiavano in parte quelle che i discepoli già conoscevano; ma per la prima volta essi sentivano che i puri di cuore, non solo, come cantava il Salmo, erano degni di salire sul monte del Signore (cf Sal 24,4), ma addirittura potevano vedere Dio. Quale era dunque quella purezza così alta da meritare tanto?Gesù l'avrebbe spiegato più volte nel corso della sua predicazione. Rome, October 25, 1999 Commentary of the Word of Life: Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God (Mt. 5:8). Jesus begins his preaching with the Sermon on the Mount. On a hill near Lake Tiberius, not far from Capernaum, Jesus sat down, as was customary for teachers, and described to the crowds what it means for a human being to be blessed. The word for beatitude, ‘blessed’, had been heard throughout the Old Testament. It spoke of the exaltation of the one who, in the widest variety of ways, fulfilled the Word of the Lord. The beatitudes of Jesus were partly an echo of the ones the disciples already knew. But for the first time they heard that not only were the pure in heart worthy of going up the hill of the Lord, as the psalmist sang (Ps. 24:4), but they could even see God.
